Rainstorm kills one, injures others at Bongo

A devastating rainstorm that hit the Bongo District in the Upper East Region left one person dead, injured three others and ripped off the roofs of educational, health and residential facilities.

A rapid assessment team comprising officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Health Service and some staff of the Bongo District Assembly conducted an inspection of the affected areas.

 

According to the Bongo District NADMO Officer, Alhaji Rafiu Tanko, four persons  who sustained injuries in the storm were sent to the Bongo District Hospital.

He said three of them were treated and discharged but a 10-year-old boy, Ali Nyaaba, who had head injuries and a broken arm when he was hit by a falling branch of a mango tree from which he had gone to pick mango fruits, died on admission.

Alhaji Tanko said 67 houses in Sambolgo, 13 houses in Boko, 16 houses in Sikabisi, 22 houses in Agomo, three houses in  Nobisi and eight houses in Bungu had their roofs ripped off.

He said 13 schools and three CHPS compounds also had either some of their roofing sheets or their entire roofs blown off.

The Balungu, Sambolgo, Bungu, Namoo, Asakulsi primary schools as well as the Sambolgo Junior School were among some of the educational institutions affected.

The Abokobisi, Feo and Sikabisi CHPS compounds were the health facilities affected by the storm, resulting in registers, medicines and other supplies being submerged in water.
