He said that was to ensure that the ministry had first-hand information on the state of roads in the country.

Alhaji Fuseini gave the directive at the closing session of a four-day annual retreat of the Ministry and its agencies at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho in the Volta Region last Friday.

Annual retreat

The retreat, which was on the theme, “Consolidating national efforts towards better road infrastructure, maintenance and financing,” brought together 90 officials from the ministry and its agencies across the country to brainstorm on the way forward.

The participants discussed the policy direction for the road sub-sector; status reports of all road agencies; effective strategies for sustainable road maintenance and financing; implications of the IMF agreement on the operations of the ministry and the 2015 financial report.

Ministry to sanction

Alhaji Fuseini warned that the ministry would not hesitate to rigidly enforce disciplinary sanctions against  any staff members of the ministry and its agencies found to be negligent in the course of their duties.

He also warned that any staff involved in activities that compromised their integrity and resulted in financial loss to the government would be dealt with.

“Let me assure you that the sanction regime will be enforced for poor supervision and monitoring as the taxpayer deserves value for money spent,” the minister said.

Communique

A five-point communique issued at the end of the retreat pledged the workers’ resolve to improve the mechanisms for assessing contractors’ performance for effective delivery of projects.

They also resolved to commit themselves to the implementation of strategies, to reduce the road sector debt portfolio and to improve stakeholder engagement to foster better understanding of the ministry’s plans and programmes.

“We hereby resolve to undertake to improve information flow within the sector and also introduce mechanisms to effectively disseminate information to the general public,” the communique said.

It further pledged to ensure efficient and effective project preparation, using industry best practices.
