Sal Valley School tops MTN/Joy reading clubs competition

Two young talented girls from the Sal Valley School at Kanda in  Accra have emerged winners in both the junior and senior categories of the Season 2 of the MTN-Joy reading clubs competition grand finale, held at the Tavern Ridge Towers in Accra.

As part of the prize package, the winners received a cheque for GH¢500 each, a weekend stay at Beige Village and an educational trip to Bunso Arboretum forest reserve.

Other contestants who participated in the competition received consolation packages from MTN.

The competition was contested by 9 children selected from Kanda, Ablekuma, Burma Camp and Osu communities all in Accra. 

Guidelines for the competition required of contestants to read a passage, identify photographs and spell words in prescribed story books.

They were also assessed for their diction, pronunciation, body language and punctuation.

At the end of the junior section of the competition, Naima Abdul Majeed from the Sal Valley School was declared winner with 101 points. Andy from the Oak Ridge School in Ablekuma was the runner up with 89 points.

The senior section also saw Barbara Amoako, also from the Sal Valley School, declared winner with 98 points. Nancy Dadzoe of Air Force Basic was runner up with 92.5 points

Sal Valley School were presented with a trophy as the overall winner of the Season Two competition.

Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs Cynthia Lumor, commended contestants for their bold efforts in reading in public, a task she considered as arduous. 

She encouraged the school children to make reading a habit beyond the competition as it opens their imagination and enhances their creativity.

The MTN-Joy reading club initiative was established to provide interventions that encouraged children between the ages of 8 and 14 to read and to enjoy the art of reading. So far the project has impacted about 500 school children.
