The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced three robbers to 25 years’ imprisonment for robbing an engineer of his pickup truck.

The convicts, Jerry Danquah, Isaac Donkor and David Asare, who were charged with committing crime and robbery,  also succeeded in robbing the victim of his laptop, Ipad, smartphone and other items, all valued at GH¢16,630.

This was after the victim had been subjected to severe beatings by the robbers.

The convicts are to reappear before the same court on April 22, 2016 for trial for another robbery case.

Sentence

The convicts, in their defence, denied any knowledge of the crime but the court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, disagreed with them stating that “they could not provide any reliable alibi to back their defence”.

“The prosecution presented sufficient evidence beyond reasonable doubt to find them guilty. Besides, the beatings they subjected the complainant to attest to their disregard for humanity,” the judge asserted.

Incident

The convicts, the prosecution said, broke into the house of the victim on December 4, 2015 at about 2 a.m. at his residence at New Weija near Accra and ordered him to surrender all the money in the house.

“Even though the victim gave them an amount of GH¢600, they subjected him to severe beatings and tied him up with his tie,” the prosecution said.

The men subsequently ransacked the victim’s room, took the items and drove his vehicle that was parked on his compound away.

Tracking

The prosecution further stated that the vehicle was equipped with a tracking device which enabled the police to trace and arrest the gang at Chopoli Barrier on the Tema-Sogakope Highway.

“A fourth accused person by name Dauda, who is the leader of the gang, is now on the run as he did not join the other members in the stolen vehicle,” it said.
