Trotro driver runs over policeman to avoid arrest
A commercial minibus driver [driver] on Friday morning run over a policeman at Trinity Avenue near Menpeasem in the East Legon area of Accra. The driver was trying to avoid arrest over an alleged traffic offence.
The incident happened around 10 am.
According to an eyewitness, the driver and his conductor (mate) abandoned the minibus and fled after the incident. There were no passengers in the minibus.
Two policemen said to be from the Madina Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) in their attempt to arrest the driver chased him with a police vehicle and stopped him on the Trinity Avenue near the entrance of the Trinity Theological Seminary.
According to the eyewitness, the policemen got out of their vehicle and one policeman went in front of the vehicle whilst the other went behind it.
In their attempt to open the door of the minibus and whilst asking the driver to come out of the vehicle, the trotro driver reportedly reversed the vehicle and run over the policeman and dragged him on the road for some metres.
Some car salespersons around the area who witnessed the incident chased the trotro driver until he parked the vehicle near a bush and took to his heels together with his conductor (mate).
The injured policeman who was been taken to the 37 Military Hospital for medical care was later confirmed dead.
