The two, Ali Amidu, 27, and Karim Azuma, 25, were said to be among a gang of five robbers who attacked the miners in January this year.

Two of their accomplices, identified only as Lukeman and Tahiru Asibi, alias 19, were lynched, while the fifth suspect, Iddrissu Mohammed, who claimed to be the driver of the other suspects, was, however, arrested on the same day at Adaase.

Amidu and Azuma, who fled the scene, had resettled in Kasoa to avoid arrest but were arrested on February 24, 2016 upon a tip-off.

Arrest

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Kasoa District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Samuel Punobyin, said Amidu and Azuma had rented separate apartments between Kasoa and Budumbura after they had escaped arrest at Adaase.

He said an eight millimetre pistol was retrieved from Amidu’s room  when it was searched after his arrest, while nothing incriminatory was found in Azuma’s room.

Investigations

According to Mr Punobyin, investigations carried out by the police had revealed that Amidu and Azuma and their three accomplices, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, allegedly attacked and robbed some small-scale miners at Adaase.

In the course of the robbery, he said some residents who heard the distress calls of the victims came to their aid and lynched Lukeman and Taahiru Asibi.

The third suspect, Mohammed, who is said to have driven the suspects to the scene, was apprehended but the timely arrival of the police to the scene saved him from being lynched.

Mohammed, who was put before a circuit court in Asankragua, has since been remanded in police custody.

Sensing danger, he said, Amidu and Azuma who lived in the Asankragua District relocated to Kasoa.

He said the two suspects would be handed over to the Asankragua District Police for prosecution.
