Two Nigeriens in police grip for stealing in Tamale

The Tamale police has arrested a Nigerien couple for allegedly stealing Gh₵18,400 from two business owners in Tamale.

Identified as Jamal Mahamudu, 28 and Naser Mahamudu, 27, they were picked up on Monday, June 11, 2018 after they allegedly stole GH₵15,400 from a store keeper, Mr. Aminu Haruna.

They were said to have pretended they wanted to buy building materials, but whilst the store keeper was not paying attention, they picked the money from his drawer and bolted.

They were using a Toyota Corolla vehicle with registration number GE 4547-18.

The Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Mr. Kusi Appiah briefing the media said the suspects told the store keeper they were building contractors and wanted to purchase some building materials for their project.

According to him, the suspects sneaked into the store and made away with the money which was kept in a drawer when the store keeper was busy in the process of serving them.

Somebody managed to capture their vehicle registration number and so when the matter was reported to the police the message was communicated to all police stations and checkpoints.

They were intercepted by the police on the Techiman road.

In another incident, Superintendent Kusi said after the suspects were arrested, another complainant, Mrs. Iddrisu Alimatu, a mobile money vendor reported that in March this year, they stole GH₵3,000 from her under similar circumstances.

The couple were said to have approached the mobile money vendor under the pretence of transacting business and made away with the money when the vendor was busily serving other clients.

He said the suspects have been charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing and would be put before court on Wednesday 13, 2018.
