The birthing kits, which included plastic sheet, gauze, umbilical clip, pair of gloves, among other items, were to assist health officials to facilitate delivery of pregnant women.

Presenting the items, the President of the club, Mrs Vida Sunkwa-Mills, said the distribution of the kits was the club’s contribution towards the reduction of maternal and neo-natal infections during delivery.

She said the club, an NGO that seeks the welfare of women, was committed to ensuring that its status was enhanced through counselling and other empowerment programmes.

She said the club was currently undertaking a building project to shelter abused women and trafficked victims as part of its efforts to eradicate violence against women.

She encouraged women to deliver their babies in the hospitals to ensure safe delivery.

The District Health Director of  Ada East, Dr Ebenezer Asiamah, who received the items, said the hospital was being underutilised by the pregnant women in the vicinity due to lack of transportation.

He explained that most people lived far from the facility, hence, there were either no vehicles to bring women in labour in or it was too expensive to transport them.

That he said, had led to the high patronage of traditional forms of delivery which were accompanied their own complications.

Sometimes, he said, the women were taken on motorbike (okada) to the facility, which was not also safe.

Therefore, he called on authorities of the community to join the hospital to find a lasting solution to the problem.

He expressed his gratitude to the Zonta club for the kind gesture, saying that it would help them a lot.
