Amenfi East NDC youth lock up party office over disagreements

Some irate youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Amenfi East constituency in the Western region have locked up the party office following disagreements over whether or not the sitting Member of the Parliament in the area should be allowed to contest the upcoming primaries as an unopposed candidate.

Their action on Wednesday followed a decision by the party leadership to issue a nomination form to an MP aspirant, Mr Alexander Baidoo.

The youth had argued that the MP for the area, Mr Akwasi Opong Fosu should not be contested in the upcoming primaries in November and that he should be allowed to go unopposed.

They insisted that the office accommodation in which the constituency operated from was rented by the MP hence they stormed the office on Wednesday, sacked the party officials and locked it up with a paddlock.

The Constituency Secretary, Kwasi Asare Gyabeng who confirmed the incident in a radio interview on Asempa FM said nothing prevented him from issuing nomination forms to any party member who wanted to contest.

He said if anybody had reasons why a particular person should not contest, that person should raise the protest and the vetting committee would deal with it.

He said the DCE has been informed and that the constituency party chairman has said it was an internal party matter and did not want to go public with it.

The new aspirant, Alexander Baidoo on his part told Asempa FM that his posters and banners have been vandalized by the youth.

He said that would not deter him from contesting in the upcoming primaries.
