Mr William Agyeman, an aspiring assembly member for the Awutu Mankessim Electoral Area, has promised total development if the electorate give him the nod at the forthcoming district assembly elections.

“My vision is to ensure total development of the area and team up with all stakeholders, especially the traditional rulers, the MP and everyone to improve the lives of the people,” Mr Agyeman told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview.

The Electoral Commission has fixed March 3, 2015 for the conduct of local elections to elect representatives of the people at the district and unit committee levels.

Mr Agyeman, who dwelt on his working experience with Plan International, a non-governmental organisation, pledged to engage all in development issues of the electoral area.

Among the communities making up the Awutu Mankessim Electoral Area are Awutu Kwaman No 1 and No 2, Awutu Mankessim, Awuakye, Police Station, Larbi Akuraa, Akpeteshi Nkwanta, Darko Botwe, Amontrom, Kofi Kwaa, Congo and Anoortor, all near Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region.

Most of the people are farmers who grow mainly pineapples, vegetables, cassava, yam and maize.

However, the erratic rainfall pattern, poor roads and very low prices for farm produces have been major challenges that affect the development of agriculture in the area.

They are also faced with environmental and sanitation problems.

According to Mr Agyeman, he had used his personal resources to provide toilet facilities and teamed up with the outgoing assembly member, Mr Ishmael Ponko, in attending to some of the development needs of the area.

He promised to get more children enrolled in school, work on bridges in the area and create a system for better marketing of farm produces in the area.

Mr Agyeman appealed to the government to improve the streetlighting system in the area.

“I will dwell on my past experience with Plan International and as an aide to the former assembly member to work with the people,” Mr Agyeman said.
