The date for the event will be announced at the launch of IEA’s Election Activities.

A statement by the Policy Think-tank dated July 17, 2024, said the debates would offer the candidates the opportunity to discuss various aspects of the nation's development process, present their views, point out weaknesses in policies of their co-contestants, as well as provide solutions to them.

It said the event will also ensure that the electorate receives first-hand information about each candidate's programmes and plans.

The statement further explained that the debates will take the form of “a policy dialogue engagement with moderators posing questions to the candidates based on submissions received from the public on various thematic areas including the economy, governance, natural resources, agriculture, education, health, gender, children, youth and other social issues.”

It, therefore, urged all candidates to take advantage of the debates when it starts, to inform the electorate about their respective policies to address the nation's challenges.
The first presidential debate was organised in 2000 by the IEA.
