Ghana-US defence deal; NDC leaders storm parliament

Leaders of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) stormed parliament on Friday in mourning clothes and red arm bands, to protest the Ghana-US Defence deal which is being considered by Parliament.

Among the NDC leaders who stormed parliament were Chairman Kofi Portuphy, General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Vice Chair Anita Desosoo and Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho.

Hordes of NDC supporters also joined their leaders in the public gallery of Parliament to monitor proceedings regarding the deal.

Their action followed moves by the Majority on Thursday to lay the defence agreement before the house despite public uproar against it.

Ghana’s Cabinet approved the agreement granting access to the U.S. army to use some of Ghana’s military installations. It also indicated that Ghana has also agreed to bear the cost and take primary responsibility for securing U.S. military facilities in the country.

The news has generated mixed reactions. The Minority wants the agreement revoked while the Majority insists the deal was agreed upon when the current Minority were in power in 1998 and 2015.
