Each awardee received GH¢400, a set of books and certificate while the overall best awardee, Miss Jewel Afriyie Ansah-Antwi of OLA Girls’ Senior High School in Ho, received GH¢600, a set of books and a certificate.

She is now a first-year medical student at the medical school of the University of Ghana.

Awards for recognition and motivation

Addressing the gathering, Mr Kpodo stated that the award was instituted to recognise achievement and also to motivate others to perform better in their pursuits.

According to him, it was aimed at lifting the academic performance in the constituency and the region as a whole because it had seen a downward trend over the years.

He said the awards would be repeated for five years and would cover overall students in all best science and best business students, and the overall best in the entire municipality and added that all the awards were qualitative and not restricted to the Ho Constituency alone.

Value for education

The guest speaker, who is the MP for Akatsi North, Mr Peter Nortsu-Kortoe, said the value of education could not be underestimated and needed to be promoted through awards to bring change into the life of recipients.

He said awards could lead to transformation of life.

Quality degree holders

Mr Nortsu Kortoe asked teachers to turn out worthy pupils and students in order to prove wrong the notion that the quality of degree holders in contemporary times was questionable partially due to examination leaks.

In an address, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, congratulated the MP on instituting the award and expressed the hope that it would be expanded in the future.
