Mahama appoints Emmanuel Kofi Buah as Lands and Natural Resources minister-designate
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as Minister of Lands and Natural Resources-designate in his latest round of ministerial appointments.
The announcement, signed by presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, was released on Tuesday, January 21.
Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah is a politician with experience in governance and resource management.
He previously served as Minister for Energy and Petroleum from 2013 to 2016 during Mahama’s first administration, where he oversaw reforms in Ghana’s energy sector.
Mr Buah has represented the Ellembelle constituency in the Western Region as a Member of Parliament since 2009.
Education and early life
Born in Atuabo in the Western Region in 1966, he holds a law degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a Master of Science degree in Management from the University of Maryland, University College, in the United States.
His academic background has bolstered his expertise in both governance and strategic management.
Political career
Mr Buah’s political journey began in 2009 when the late President John Atta Mills appointed him as Deputy Minister of Energy.
He was later promoted to Minister for Energy and Petroleum in 2013, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the sector, particularly in ensuring energy security and sustainable petroleum management.
In Parliament, he has contributed as a member of several committees, including Trade, Industry, and Tourism; Members Holding Offices of Profit; Privileges; and the Committee of Selection.
A vision for sustainable development
As Minister of Lands and Natural Resources-designate, Mr. Buah will oversee critical sectors such as mining, forestry, and land management.
His role will include formulating policies for sustainable natural resource development, addressing illegal mining (galamsey), and ensuring efficient land administration practices.
If approved by Parliament, he is expected to bring his wealth of experience and expertise to this vital portfolio, ensuring the responsible management of Ghana’s natural resources for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
