Mahama must consult in appointing new EC boss - NPP

The General-Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has called on President Johjn Mahama to undertake widespread and thorough consultation before appointing a new Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

In a statement, tHe Chief Scribe of the largest opposition party insisted that the Electoral Commission has suffered major setbacks arising from embarrassing revelations during the Election Petition at the Supreme Court and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court which culminated in the cancellation of the District Assembly elections occasioning colossal losses to the exchequer.

He therefore stressed that, it was important for the Electoral Commission to win back the confidence of the Ghanaian people.

To achieve this goal, Mr Agyepong posited that the President should through his Council of State engage all major stakeholders in a constructive manner in order to appoint a new chairman for the EC who will inspire the revival of public confidence in the commission.

Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan who was the current chair of the commission is due for retirement at age 70 this year.

He started work at the commission first as a deputy chair for the 1992 presidential and parliamentary elections.

As chairman, his first major elections was the1996 elections.
