Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP flagbearer

Nana Addo does not believe in democracy – Twum Boafo

The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum Boafo, has doubts whether the present day New Patriotic Party (NPP), reduced to a terrorist organization, is the same party J.A. Kufuor led to power from 2001 to 2008.

He says he does not believe the NPP of today is still the party of BJ Da Rocha or Peter Ala Adjetey. It cannot be Agyenim Boateng’s or Odoi Sykes’ party, and certainly not the same party J.A. Kufuor led to a famous victory in 2000.

Power struggles and leadership bickering in the NPP, culminating in the suspected politically-motivated murder of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, has left deep cracks in Ghana’s largest opposition.

Alhaji Adams Mahama died on Thursday, May 21, 2015, a day after he was doused with suspected acid.

“Is this the party? And you ask yourself through all the changing scenes of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, you ask yourself, why have they been reduced to the lowest common denominator? Right now they are a motley crew, a hotchpotch of guerrillas involved in terrorist activity’ that’s simply what they are”, explained Twum Boafo.

Kwadwo Twum Boafo, who made the observations while contributing to discussions on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji programme on Saturday, said happenings in the NPP show Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP flagbearer, has lost all authority in the party, adding also that while Nana projects himself as a democrat, he does not believe in democracy.

“Nana Addo has lost every shred of authority he has in the NPP and nobody is going to run away from that. Let me begin, for those who don’t remember, when Nana Addo did what I call the ‘Ursula and Naa Torshie maneuver,’ where for the sake of Ursula Owusu and Naa Torshie, he decided to employ, once again, unconstitutional methods and means to keep them in parliament because they were facing challenges from within.”

In that instance, he said, Nana Addo called for the promotion of Gas, after which he banned primaries in constituencies where NPP members of parliament were Ga. Primaries were also cancelled in constituencies with NPP women parliamentarians.

Twum Boafo said the NPP rebelled and rejected the proposal, forcing Nana Addo to capitulate.

In the case of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong, he said Nana Addo has not hidden his displeasure with their election as chairman and general secretary respectively. Against the NPP’s own constitution, Nana Addo has declared his preference for Fred Oware and Sir John, he said, resulting in the undermining of the elected duo even before they took office.

“If you remember, the very first meeting Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong tried to call at the party headquarters resulted in the famous gun battle that was replete with pangas, go-to-hell, machettes, tapoli, wƆma funu…, name any offensive weapon that you could have, it was there. I even saw a club with nails in it. And Nana Addo was using his so called ‘invisible forces,’ and if you recall, Kwabena Agyapong and Paul Afoko tried to change that so-called security detail at the party headquarters…”

Kwadwo Twum Boafo said hardly a week passes by without Kwabena Agyapong and Paul Afoko being subjected to attacks in the media and calls for their removal from office by allies of Nana Addo, in spite of the pair winning a fair election.

“So there goes Nana Addo’s so-called respect for democracy. I have often told people in this country that he doesn’t have a bone of democracy in his body. It is all talk, all fluff, huff, puff, chaff. No substance, zero.”
