NDC Primary: Mahama contender to legalise marijuana

George Boateng, the 45-year-old man who wants to contest President Mahama in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Primary, has said that he would legalise marijuana if elected into office.

Mr Boateng, who is the only candidate contesting the President in the primary set for November, said marijuana was medicinal and could become a major export commodity for Ghana.

“The government can export marijuana and use the proceeds to develop the country,” he told Accra-based Asempa FM Monday.

According to Mr Boateng, legalising marijuana would create jobs for the youth.

He said: “We will grow and export it [marijuana] under government control. It will help us.“Weed is not a bad thing."

Mr Boateng said he wanted to be the NDC’s Presidential Candidate in the 2016 election because incumbent President Mahama had run down the economy.

He mentioned high inflation, a depreciating currency and corruption as some of the challenges facing the country.
