‘Restrain EC from conducting district assembly election’

The assembly members for Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region have appealed to the government to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting district assembly election in the area.

Though the tenure of office of the current assembly members was not over yet, the EC had released a notice through its office at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly, disclosing its intention of organising a district assembly election in February 2015.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Assembly Member of the Odumase–Krobo Electoral Area, Mr Benjamin Awulley, said “We need a clarification from the government and the EC about the incoming election. Our Constitution makes it clear that assembly election should be held  every four years.  We want the government to come out with its intention so that we would know our fate”.

He stated, for instance, that the EC’s intention to dissolve the current assembly was inappropriate as they had been in office for a short period.

However, the Assembly Member for the Salon Electoral Area, Akuse, Mr Theophilus Quist, stated that the assembly wanted a decision to be taken on the tenure of office before the approval of the 2015 budget but “we were made to approve it before the discussion of our tenure of office, which is of no interest to authorities anymore”.

Also, the Assembly Member of the Osorkutu Electoral Area, Akuse, Mr Promise Asare, said the dissolution of the assembly generated a heated argument during their first meeting after the assembly’s inauguration in October 2014.

He said the Presiding Member of the Lower Manya Krobo, Dr Peace Mamley Tetteh, pledged to provide the assembly with the necessary feedback on the closure within a period of 14 days but had since not responded.

“Currently, we do not know our fate; we have not been called for any meeting or discussion on the dissolution of the assembly,”he added.
