Family

Speaking at the launch of the centenary anniversary of the GSA in Accra last Saturday, Mr Mubarak said the idea of scouting which was voluntary, could be traced to the values of the family set-up which influenced relationships to society.

The event was on the theme: “Enhancing the legacies of our predecessors for youth development”.

He said the importance of scouting to national development enabled generations that had associated themselves to the association to acquire the spirit of patriotism which for a long time benefited the country in diverse ways.

“Aside family, classroom teaching also fosters trust between citizens and this develops solidarity within communities,” he said.

Mr Mubarak emphasised the need for a new mechanism to be put in place for the youth to provide meaningful service to nation building.

Okoe Vanderpuije

The  Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, paid glowing tributes to some past scouters and challenged the youth to emulate the good examples of those forebears.

He said the GSA and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) should laise with the National Youth Authority to look for solutions to the unemployment problems in the country.

Mr Vanderpuije challenged the GSA to expand its membership so that the problems of streetism could be tackled.

For his part, the Deputy Chief Scout, Mr Jerry Aikins, outlined activities lined up for the centenary anniversary celebration which included media outreach programmes, international scouting, national quiz competition and a visit to the graveside of Samuel Wood in Cape Coast.
