UCF urges govt to address energy issues

The United Cadres’ Front (UCF) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the government to seriously look at the current challenges facing the energy sector.

According to the UCF, the government would be doing itself a great harm if the current energy challenges were not addressed.

It has also questioned the ongoing maintenance works embarked upon by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at a period where Ghana has not received enough supply of gas from Nigeria, and described the situation as a sabotage.

In a press release signed by the head of its media relations, Mr Sammy Donkoh, the group further advocated an audit on the performance of the ECG and added that, “it will go a long way in flushing out those who are ruthless in using state offices to pursue their personal and political agenda”.

The group also described as diabolical, comments made by individuals which sought to blame the government for the current challenges in the energy sector, other than the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and the ECG.

They also stated that “for civil society groups to keep quiet and for political opponents to use the airwaves and newspapers to pour scorn on the NDC administration gives credence to  the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) aversion for NDC’s victory in the 2012 elections; thus, pursuing the agenda of making the country ungovernable”.

“Beyond public relations, which is important to those who are prepared to hear and empathise, the aim of the opposition to undermine the administration of the NDC cannot be ruled out”, the statement added.

Touching on the inefficiencies of the ECG, the group said there was a high level of ineptitude towards work by staff of the ECG despite the huge salaries paid them.

“The ECG is unable to collect huge sums of money owed them by consumers and there are those who are obviously inclined to the NPP who are singing the song of their masters. The lackadaisical approach to even explain to the people of Ghana why the ECG should undertake a major maintenance schedule at this time is highly questionable”, the statement said.
