Ghanaian boxer Emmanuel “Game Boy” Tagoe’s highly anticipated WBO International super lightweight clash against unbeaten American Ernesto “Tito” Mercado has been cancelled after the former IBO world champion missed the contracted weight limit by a staggering 10 pounds.
The bout, scheduled for Saturday night, August 15, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, was contracted at the 140-pound super lightweight limit. However, Tagoe came in at 150 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in, effectively stepping onto the scales an entire weight class heavier.
The two camps subsequently attempted to negotiate financial and structural adjustments to save the fight, but efforts proved unsuccessful.
It was a non-negotiable situation for Mercado – rated number 4 by the WBO, 5th in the world by the IBF, Ring number 10, and edging closer to a shot at the 140 lbs world titles. Having prepared to compete at the contracted weight, accepting the bout would have meant the 24-year-old American facing a significantly heavier opponent who had not gone through the physical demands of making 140 pounds, raising obvious safety and competitive concerns.
The cancellation is a bitter disappointment for Tagoe, who had described Mercado as the kind of challenge he wanted at this stage of his career. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken this fight,” Tagoe had said, signalling his confidence ahead of the contest.
The Ghanaian, who holds a 34-2 record with 16 knockouts, later accepted responsibility for the collapse, admitting: “I don’t blame anyone, I blame myself.” He apologised to his fans and loved ones, saying the experience was a lesson.
For Mercado, 19-0 with 18 knockouts, the setback is particularly frustrating. The rapidly rising American has emerged as one of the division’s most dangerous prospects, but this marks the fourth time in just two and half years that one of his scheduled fights has been cancelled because an opponent missed weight or withdrew.
The bout was ultimately removed from the DAZN undercard of Claressa Shields’ meeting with Kaye Scott, bringing an abrupt end to what promised to be a major opportunity for both fighters.
