Central, Ashanti regions win Airtel Rising Stars

The boys team from the Central Region and the Ashanti Region girls team will represent Ghana in the Airtel inter-country tournament in Nigeria after winning this season’s Airtel Rising Stars football competition.

The two sides garnered the most points in the national finals played at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman last Sunday and received GH¢2,000, medals and souvenirs of the sponsors.

The teams are scheduled to travel to Nigeria in September for the annual competition which includes 17 other winners from various countries in Africa.

The CEO of Airtel Ghana, Philip Sowah, at the closing ceremony, acknowledged the contribution of stakeholders such as the National Juvenile Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ministries of Education and   Youth and Sports and Samsung for their contribution to the success of the programme over the years.

GFA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, commended Airtel Ghana for its contribution to the development of youth football and noted that the programme had offered the FA a good opportunity to unearth football talents for the U-17 and U-20 national teams.

Present at the programmes were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Julius Debrah, Airtel Rising Stars Ambassadors Nii Odartey Lamptey and Sammy Kuffour, coaches Ibrahim Sunday and Francis Oti-Akenten.
