The Black Stars captain replaced Brazilian midfielder Davi in the 57th minute but it took the 29-year-old just nine minutes to announce his presence after finishing off a perfect pass from Wu Lei.

He received the ball just outside the opposition box and unleashed a powerful low shot into the corner after escaping his marker. It was his third goal in four league matches this season.

Bi Jinhao opened the scoring for the home side in the 30th minute, but their lead was cut short by Wenjun Lu for Shanghai SIPG in the 45th minute.

Gyan was named on the bench by coach Sven Goran Eriksson but his entry rejuvenated title chasing SIPG who took the lead for the first time through the former Al Ain forward.

SIPG however could not hold on to their lead as Bi Jinhao netted their equaliser in the 68th-minute.

Shanghai SIPG have now slipped to the second spot on the league log, with Guangzhou Evergreen topping on 47 points, one point above Gyan’s SIPG.
