Unibank looking at the bigger picture in football

Unibank, the official bank of Ghana’s senior male football team, the Black Stars, has indicated its intention to extend its support to Ghana, depending on how the first term of the deal with the national team and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) goes.

The bank is considering a situation where it can team up with other interested parties to sponsor the local league to further raise the level of the game and other sports in the country so that the national teams can equal other teams in international competitions.

Dr Kwabena Duffuor II, the Chief Operating Officer of Unibank, in an exclusive with the Daily Graphic said that consideration had stemmed from the performance of the Local Black Stars at the just ended Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament in South Africa, where they finished second to Libya.

“ The performance of the Stars at CHAN was impressive and commendable and that gives us the hope that if the necessary support is given to the local game, the teams could achieve more,” Dr Duffuor said.

He said the three-year sponsorship deal with the Black Stars was the stepping stone and as an indigenous bank, it was inspired to share its success with others whose activities brought success and pride to the nation.

“As an indigenous bank which started only 13 years ago, but have already recorded so much success in the industry, we are inspired to be associated with other indigenous brands that show the qualities of success, hence our decision to support the national team and so far we are satisfied with what the partnership has achieved and we look forward to a more fruitful future,” Dr Duffuor said.

He said the bank had outlined a number of programmes to support the Stars during their World Cup campaign in Brazil, which was intended to garner more support for the team.
