Not just a winning start it was for Cameroun, but it also saw striker, Gaelle score her first hat-trick, a performance that no doubt excited coach Enow Ngachu.

"We scored six goals in our first-ever Women’s World Cup match – it couldn’t really have gone any better.

"We’re quite happy, because we’ve made history today. In our next match against Japan, things will be very different, because they’re the best team in the world. We’re here to learn, and we want to make Africa proud," the coach, who also led the team to their maiden Olympics in London 2012, said.

It was indeed an action-packed, goal-filled matchday which saw three wins . USA started their campaign with a 3-1 against Australia, while defending champions, Japan managed a 1-0 win over debutantes Switzerland.

African champions Nigeria came from behind to hold Sweden to a 3-3 draw.
