Dr Toni Aubynn: Government must support local clubs

The Board Chairman of Medeama SC, Dr Toni Aubynn, has called on the government to financially assist local clubs that qualify for the continental club competitions.

According to him, the financial burden on clubs participating in continental competitions was so huge that if they did not get support from the state, it would be difficult to shoulder it alone.

He told Daily Graphic in an interview last Friday that even though clubs were owned by individuals, the contribution they made to the economy by way of employment could not be underestimated.

“They must be helped, and I believe that it’s something the government must consider as a matter of importance because we shouldn’t look at it narrowly from the fact that it’s just a private entity.

“Can you imagine the women’s football team, if these girls do not have football and they were staying at home, could you imagine what could be happening to them? he asked.

According to Dr Aubynn, these clubs rendered invaluable services to the state and even when they played in continental competitions, it was to project the image of the country, therefore, it wouldn’t be out of place if they were supported.

“The owners of these clubs are doing a great service to the nation so when they qualify and get to a certain point, I am not saying they (government) should take all the cost, but they must be helped,” he stated.

Dr Aubynn, who is also the chairman of the Black Galaxies management committee, also appealed to corporate individuals and the government to consider Medeama SC as they prepared to participate in the continental competition.

“I am hoping that when we qualify, they will help either by a private entity which is serious about developing sports in Ghana,” he said.
