Ghana has officially joined the global chess community at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with the national delegation departing Accra on September 14, 2026, to compete in the prestigious tournament scheduled to run from September 14 to 28.
The West African nation is proudly fielding teams in both the Open and Women’s sections of the competition, marking another significant step in Ghana’s growing presence on the international chess stage.
The Ghanaian Open team is led by Captain Philip Elikem Ameku and features a blend of experienced campaigners and rising talents. The team includes CM Bernard Anhwere, CM Cephas Clinton Fomevor, FM John Kojo Hasford, Prince Akpa, and Daniel Loglo.
In the Women’s section, Captain Maxwell Kwasi Kporxah will steer a quintet comprising WCM Maud Benson, WCM Gertrude Banini, Ridham, Sumya Ibrahim Dotse, and Esi Dzidzor Dotse.
Diplomatic and Technical Leadership
The delegation is headed by Air Cmdr. George Arko-Dadzie. A major highlight for Ghana is the dual role of Christiana Ashley, President of the Ghana Chess Association.
Aside from playing a significant role in the delegation, Ms. Ashley, an International Arbiter, has been selected among the officials appointed to officiate at the Olympiad.
Her appointment underscores Ghana’s contribution to the sport both on and off the chessboard.
Government Support and Goodwill
The Ghanaian contingent is being supported by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the Ghana Chess Association.
Ahead of the competition, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, charged the team to exhibit the highest standards of discipline and sportsmanship.
“I wish the entire Ghanaian chess team the very best of luck at the Olympiad. Represent Ghana with pride and determination, give your very best and make the nation proud,” Mr Ampofo-Ankrah stated.
Ghana wishes its players, officials, and the entire delegation a successful and memorable participation in Samarkand.
As the team settles in Uzbekistan, the nation stands firmly behind its representatives. Ghana is represented. Ghana is on the world chess stage.
