Ghana Premier League: Medeama guard top spot as Hearts, Samartex turn up heat

Medeama SC have little time to dwell on continental disappointment.

With their CAF Champions League adventure over, the defending Ghana Premier League champions must immediately protect their domestic territory as an intriguing battle for top spot takes centre stage this weekend.

Ibrahim Tanko’s side travel to the Debibi Presby Park tomorrow to face newcomers Debibi United, knowing any slip could open the door for Hearts of Oak to reclaim the summit.

Medeama seized first place last Wednesday after grinding out a 1-0 victory over Port City United in their outstanding fixture at the T&A Stadium in Tarkwa, leapfrogging FC Samartex and reinforcing their determination to retain the championship.

Their preliminary-round exit from the CAF Champions League has at least removed the complication of juggling domestic and continental commitments.

Tanko can now concentrate fully on defending Medeama’s league crown and earning another opportunity to compete in Africa.

But Debibi is hardly the ideal destination for a side seeking a comfortable return to domestic business.

Debibi United may be newcomers, sitting 14th with four points, but Isaac Nii Armah’s side have quickly established the Presby Park as difficult territory for visiting teams.

They remain unbeaten at home after holding Asante Kotoko to a pulsating 2-2 draw before dismantling Young Apostles 3-0, results that underline both their confidence and attacking potential.

A victory over Medeama could propel Debibi several places up the table and provide their strongest statement yet that they belong in the top flight.

Their threat should increase with the return of Richard Owusu, whose brace helped secure the draw against Kotoko. Former Hearts of Oak forward Kwadwo Obeng Jnr, another two-goal hero in the victory over Young Apostles, provides proven experience in attack, while Ibrahim

Alhassan gives Armah another dangerous offensive option.

That trio should provide a stern examination for a Medeama defence that cannot afford any continental hangover.

Tanko, however, has evidence that his side can withstand pressure away from Tarkwa. Medeama remain unbeaten on their travels this season after draws against Vision FC and Dreams FC.

Maintaining that record would guarantee at least a point, but the champions will recognise that title defence demands more than merely surviving difficult away grounds. With rivals hovering, victories are the currency that keeps champions in control.

Hearts of Oak are among those waiting to capitalise on any slip up. Nebojsa Kapor’s Phobians travel to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to face winless Dreams FC knowing victory could return them to the top, depending on Medeama’s result.

On form, Hearts should sense an opportunity. Dreams have been among the league’s poorest performers this season and are yet to record a victory, while the Phobians also carry positive memories of this fixture after winning 1-0 at the same venue last season.

Yet desperation can make struggling teams dangerous.

Dreams know another defeat would deepen an already troubling start and will view the visit of Hearts as an opportunity to reset their campaign while avenging last season’s home loss. Kapor’s men, therefore, must avoid confusing their hosts’ position with vulnerability.

In other encounters, Aduana FC welcome Swedru All Blacks to the Nana Agyemang Badu Park in another potentially significant contest.

Victory could propel Aduana up the standings, but All Blacks, currently 11th, have their own incentive to attack the fixture and will fancy their chances of taking maximum points away from home.

At the Nana Boamah Darko II Park in Kukurantumi, Port City United host Bechem United with the home side seeking an immediate response after their narrow midweek defeat to Medeama.

AshantiGold FC face a demanding trip to the Kpando Stadium to battle Heart of Lions, while Basake Holy Stars welcome Berekum Chelsea to the AAK Sports Arena.

Young Apostles, meanwhile, travel to the Nsenkyire Sports Arena at Samreboi to confront FC Samartex, another side firmly involved in the early battle at the top.

Having been displaced by Medeama following Wednesday’s outstanding fixture, Samartex have an opportunity to maintain pressure on the champions.

The weekend action begins later today when 10th-placed Vision FC welcome Bibiani Gold Stars to the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema New Town for another potentially entertaining encounter.

But the spotlight will inevitably follow the championship contenders tomorrow.

Medeama have emerged from Africa with only the domestic title to chase, while Hearts and Samartex are already applying pressure. Debibi now provide the champions with an immediate examination of their resilience.

For Tanko and his players, the message is straightforward: continental disappointment must not become domestic distraction.
