Jordan, Partey open accounts in Europe

It was a good weekend for Ghanaian internationals, Jordan Ayew and Thomas Partey, as they opened their accounts in Europe for their clubs ahead of Sunday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Congo in Kumasi and the return clash in Brazzaville next week.

Jordan scored for Swansea in their 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at the Selhurst Park in the English Premier League, while Partey netted the fifth goal as Atletico thrashed Las Palmas 5-1 in the Spanish La Liga.

It rained goals for Ghanaian players in other leagues, with Godfred Donsah scoring the only goal in Bologna’s 1-0 win against Italian Serie A newcomers Benevento. In the Major League Soccer (MLS), Jonathan Mensah was on the score sheet for Colombus Crew as they defeated FC Dallas 2-1, while David Accam was on the losing side despite scoring in Chicago Fire’s 1-2 defeat against FC Minnesota.

England

Christian Atsu played an impressive game and provided an assist in Newcastle United's opening goal as they defeated Andre Ayew's West Ham 3-0 at the Saint James’ Park.

Leicester City's Daniel Amartey was an unused substitute in a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in a game Dutch-born star of Ghanaian descent, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, played the entire game for Crystal Palace as they were defeated 2-0 by Swansea.

Italy

The absence of Kwadwo Asamoah from the Juventus side that defeated Genoa 4-2 further strengthened the speculation that the midfielder could be on his way out of the Italian champions to join Turkish giants, Galatasary.

Despite being linked with a move to England, Afriyie Acquah was an 81st minute substitute for Torino as they thrashed Alfred Duncan's Sassaulo 3-0.

Netherlands

Thomas Agyepong came on as a substitute for NAC Breda in the 69th minute as they drew 2-2 with Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredevisie, while Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Derrick Luckassen played the entire game for PSV Eindhoven in a 2-0 victory over Roda JC.

Denmark

Godsway Donyoh and Emmanuel Asante scored for FC Nordsjaelland as they triumphed 3-0 over giants FC Copenhagan in the Danish top flight.

Joseph Mensah lasted 82 minutes for AC Horsen as they were beaten 2-0 by Brondby, midfielder Ibrahim Moro played the entire game for Silkeborg despite losing 0-2 to Hobro.

Turkey

Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan, was a 57th minute substitute for his Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor as they held Osmanlispor to a 2-2 draw, while Joseph Attamah Lawerh was on the winning side as Basakseher defeated Konyaspor 2-1. But it was a weekend to forget for Isaac Sackey who got injured in the first half as Alanyaspor drew 1-1 with Kardemir Karabuk and cost him his place in the Black Stars squad that has assembled in Kumasi to face Congo in a two-led, World Cup qualifier.
