Kick Away wins Top 8

Edward ‘Kick Away' Afrifa exacted revenge on old foe Nii Ayi on his way towards a sweet triumph in the novelty Top 8 draught championship held at Community 9 in Tema last Monday.

Dubbed the Independence Draught Championship as it took place on the morning after Ghana's 59th anniversary as a sovereign state, the one-day event had lined up the finest names in the game at the Community 9 Draught Club.

 

The list included Adjetey, Kuma, Ekow Simple and David, as sponsor Ofosu Appiah Brothers, achieved the rare feat of assembling the best names on the local scene.

The names on parade had drawn a large crowd to Tema, with enthusiasts travelling from Accra, Ashaiman, Kasoa and even Koforidua to witness the showpiece event.

As usual, Kick Away and Theophilus Nii Ayi Quaye were in the spotlight, and so when they clashed in the semi-finals stage, it was tagged "the final before the final".

Kick Away prevailed with a 3-1 victory that secured him a berth in the final and a revenge for the recent defeat 5-4 defeat he suffered at the same venue in a direct match-up between the two.

He then went on to beat Evans ‘Ortega' Koranteng 2-1 in the final to claim the ultimate prize.

Nii Ayi beat David 3-0 in the third place play-off to win for himself a consolation.
