Liberia coach calls for government support

Jamie Debbah, head coach of the Liberian local team, has appealed to his government to invest in football.

The Liberians exhibited a spirited performance against Senegal but eventually lost through a penalty shootout at the Cape Coast Stadium last Saturday to exit  the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations tournament.

In a post-match address, Coach Debbah lauded his side's performance and appealed to the government of Liberia to invest in the future of football.

"We have never defeated Senegal before and this game meant a lot to us as a nation. Senegal is a great football country but my lads gave them a run for their money. Though I'm disappointed we lost, I'm proud of the attitude of these young players.

"It has been difficult for us over the years, in terms of support from our government. I am sure everyone at home watched this game and now they know what the future holds for our football.

"We had a poor preparation before this tournament. About 95 per cent of the players had no exposure of playing in an international tournament and I think that affected us in the game. We couldn't get support to travel anywhere for such experience.”

"I hope the government and the people are now ready to invest in this team after watching this game.”
Senegal joined Ghana to progress to the next stage of the competition.
