VIDEO: Man Utd boss Amorim admits they struggled to contain Kamaldeen Sulemana

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his side found it “very difficult” to contain the electric Kamaldeen Sulemana during their hard-fought 3-2 comeback victory over Southampton at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old Ghanaian winger was a constant menace for the United defence, dazzling with his pace and trickery as the visitors appeared poised for a stunning upset. Southampton took the lead early and looked on course for a famous away victory until a remarkable 12-minute hat-trick by Amad Diallo salvaged the points for the home side.

"Very Difficult to Stop"

Amorim, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, did not hold back in his praise for Sulemana’s performance.

“They did a very good job, Southampton,” he said. “Creating space in-between the lines. Number 20 [Kamaldeen Sulemana] with a lot of space. We had a lot of difficulty to stop that player.”

United’s defence, particularly Leny Yoro, struggled to cope with Sulemana’s relentless energy and direct play. Amorim noted the challenges his side faced but expressed relief at the eventual outcome.

“In the end, it is good. A very difficult game, a game of two halves. When they lose their physicality, we find the space to use. The feeling is we have so much to do – the team is really tired. It was a win, it was good – let’s continue.”

Lack of Control and Frustration

Amorim, who had earlier stated he would learn more about his players against Southampton than in matches against Liverpool and Arsenal, was visibly frustrated by United’s lack of control during the game.

“It seems like a lack of enthusiasm. Ugarte is late and Mainoo is late, Bruno Fernandes going outside when the ball is inside,” he explained. “One transition and Yoro cannot catch the guy – small things push the team behind, and then we get nervous. Today was not a lack of enthusiasm, it was a lack of control in the game.”

Kamaldeen Shines Despite Defeat

Although Southampton left Old Trafford empty-handed, Sulemana’s exceptional display did not go unnoticed. The Ghanaian international, a standout in an otherwise struggling Saints side, continues to prove his worth as a rising star in the Premier League.

For Manchester United, the victory keeps them in contention at the top of the table, but Amorim’s post-match comments underline the challenges they face in maintaining consistency.

As the season progresses, United will need to address these lapses if they are to compete for silverware, while Southampton can take heart from a spirited performance despite remaining rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
