Medeama SC eye Premier League glory again

PREMIER League side Medeama SC have set their sights on winning the upcoming 2024/25 season's title, with the aim of representing Ghana once again in the continental club championships.

Dr Toni Aubynn, the board chairman of the Tarkwa-based club, expressed optimism that the club's ambitious target is well within reach, given their past successes in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.

In an exclusive interview with the Graphic Sports last week, Dr Aubynn emphasised the club’s readiness to compete at the highest level.

He revealed that the club had bolstered its squad with new signings ahead of the new season, which kicks off next month, in a bid to strengthen their chances of securing the coveted league title.

“We are focused on winning the league. You cannot enter a competition like this and expect anything less than first place. Medeama is no longer a new team in the league; we have matured, having won the league and the FA Cup before. We’ve also represented Ghana in Africa, so winning the league is definitely our goal,” Dr Aubynn stated confidently.

He noted the seamless integration of the newly recruited players into the team, citing their recent preseason victory over rivals, Asante Kotoko, as a testament to the squad’s potential.

However, Dr Aubynn cautioned that while the win against Kotoko was a positive sign, it did not guarantee league success. Rather, it serves as motivation for the players to perform consistently throughout the season.

Acknowledging Kotoko’s formidable presence in the domestic league, Dr Aubynn admitted that defeating them in the preseason was significant but reiterated that the coach is maintaining a cautious approach. He stressed the importance of managing expectations to avoid placing undue pressure on the players.

Reflecting on Medeama’s recent participation in the continental club competition, Dr Aubynn described the experience as both challenging and valuable.

He specifically mentioned their match against Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where Medeama held their own until a crucial mistake in the 70th minute led to their defeat.

“I think we made a mark, and the experience was very important to us. I was in Egypt to watch our match against Al Ahly, and they were on their knees until a mistake by one of our players cost us. But it was an important learning experience for the team,” he noted.
