Yaw Mireku Jnr produced the tournament’s outstanding score of 45 points, but MTN Ghana’s 30th Anniversary Invitational at Achimota Golf Club carried a significance beyond the leaderboard as the telecoms giant used golf to frame three decades of growth, resilience and reinvention.
About 120 golfers competed in the 18-hole event, with Mireku Jnr dominating Men’s Group B, four points clear of Frederick Andre Feraille on 41. Nathan Lee-Williams Annobi placed third with 39.
Frederick Semenu Duvor won Men’s Group A with 39 points, edging Isaac Asante and Kwame Boafo, both on 37, while Julienne Afi matched that winning score to take Ladies’ Group A ahead of Princess Nkansah-Boadu and Mary Agyeman Prempeh.
Kous Louanges Mang claimed Ladies’ Group B with 38 points, while Kofi Mangesi won Men’s Group C on countback after tying Derrick Morgan on 40. Elorm R. Akuash Bonney topped Ladies’ Group C with 42 points.
Jan Vogel and Helen Appah won the men’s and ladies’ senior categories respectively.
Yet the deeper message came off the course. MTN Ghana Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson likened the company’s 30-year evolution to an 18-hole round of golf requiring patience, discipline, recovery and strategic judgement.
His point was that MTN’s journey had rarely been played entirely from the fairway. Innovation and investment — particularly in mobile money and fibre connectivity — had delivered major gains, but regulatory pressure, competition and unexpected setbacks had also forced strategic adjustments.
For Dr Yamson, that was precisely why golf provided an apt anniversary metaphor: one poor hole does not define the round. The player recalibrates, chooses the smartest recovery shot and keeps moving towards the target.
At the pristine Achimota course, MTN’s celebration was therefore less about looking back than signalling that, after 30 years, the next round of competition has already begun.
