Northern Rumble: SP Sport takes boxing beyond Accra with Tamale showdown

Tamale will become the latest frontier in Ghana boxing’s push beyond Accra when SP Sport Promotions stages its inaugural Northern Rumble at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on December 5, opening a pathway for northern fighters while testing the commercial potential of professional boxing outside its traditional strongholds.

Scheduled for the weekend of Farmers Day, the event represents the next phase of SP Sport’s nationwide expansion strategy, with promoter Samuel Agyei Darkwah targeting regular fight nights in Tamale and other regional capitals rather than isolated promotional shows.

Northern Rumble will be officially launched at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on October 17, ahead of what Mr Darkwah believes could become a landmark event for boxing in the Northern Region.

The December 5 card comes a day after the national Farmers Day celebrations and will also connect boxing with agriculture and the local economy, with organisers and fighters expected to join farmers in Tamale for the national celebration before attention switches to fight night.

Mr Darkwah insists the ambition stretches far beyond one weekend. SP Sport plans to stage two or three promotions annually in Tamale, providing a competitive platform for fighters drawn from the region’s estimated seven to eight boxing gyms and creating clearer routes into the professional ranks and championship contention.

“We want to promote boxers in the Northern Region and have more promotions around the country — spread boxing everywhere,”  Darkwah told the Graphic Sports.

“It’s a nationwide sport, not just for Accra. We are trying every possible means to take the sport across the country.”

The Northern Rumble follows SP Sport’s first major regional experiment in Koforidua, where its 1957 Boxing Night in March delivered a series of explosive finishes.

Abu “Tilapia” Kamoko produced a first-round knockout, while SP Sport fighters Charles Tetteh Narh and George Faho Mensah also recorded stoppage victories.

That success has encouraged the promotional outfit to broaden its footprint, with Bono, Kumasi, Cape Coast and Takoradi also earmarked for future events.
