PRESEC, WASS win Accra Mayor's Cup

Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) Legon and West Africa Senior High School (WASS) have been crowned winners of respective boys and girls titles at the maiden edition of the Accra Mayor's Cup held on Saturday in Accra.

PRESEC coasted to a comfortable 33-20 win over St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School while WASS edged Accra Wesley Girls High School 13-11 in exciting finals watched by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mayor, Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

PRESEC who had accounted for Osu Presbyterian Senior High School (Osu PRESEC) on the way to the final raced into a 6-1 lead in the boys final courtesy baskets by eventual boys Most Valuable Player Kwame Debrah and centre Abdul Rafik Razak.

Aquinas attempted a fightback in the second quarter after shots by Marie Kyelem but unstoppable fast-breaks by Debrah and forward Paa Kofi Ayeh Safori ensured that the Blue Magicians never lost the lead.

Aquinas got managed a five-point response with some long-range shooting which left the score at 19-16 at the end of the third quarter.

However, PRESEC reimposed their dominance in the fourth quarter from the free-throw line through Safori. He scored two more points before Aquinas went on a 4-0 run.

The Aquinas lads who looked assured when they trounced Sacred Heart SHS 18-5 in the opening round began to take more risks and PRESEC seized on their defensive lapses with Debrah sealing the win with a one-handed dunk after a fastbreak.

In the girls final, WASS survived a late fight-back from Accra Wesley Girls SHS to win the trophy.

WASS went into the halftime break with an 11-6 with girls MVP Irada Yunus and Ayisha Abubakar leading the scoring but Accra Wesley Girls made the final score more respectable with a late run.

In an address after the competition, Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah said the tournament was part of efforts to develop sporting talents in the Greater Accra region.

He also fulfilled a pledge to 2018 Sprite Ball winners Osu PRESEC with a presentation of equipment for a new basketball course.
