The membership, he said, would be made up of heads of federations  in the various sports disciplines, as well as individuals who have in-depth knowledge of sports.

According to the minister, the team will  be inaugurated soon for them to focus on how Ghana can make an  impact at the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

Mr Vanderpuye made this known when he welcomed  the national weightlifting team, Black Cranes, at the Kotoka International Airport yesterday.

“In the midst of difficulties we have with financing, we cannot spread ourselves thin on the ground, so we will look at the sporting disciplines where we have comparative advantage and potential, and we shall focus on those sportsmen and women so that we can make the greatest impact at the next Olympics,” he said.

He commended the team and the officials for achieving a tremendous feat for Ghana despite the financial challenges they faced prior to their participation in the tournament.

“It has never happened that Ghana has achieved such a momentous feat in weightlifting considering the fact that this is a young sport.

“I am inspired and motivated by your performance. As the former president of the weightlifting federation, I have always believed that weightlifting has the potential to be the foremost flagship of Ghana sports,” he noted.

The Black Cranes participated in the IWF and Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Penang, Malaysia, and won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze.

The team was sponsored by Twellium Industries, producers of Rush energy drink, Star Assurance, TT Brothers and McDan Group.
