FC Samartex’s perfect start in the Ghana Premier League faces its toughest test yet when the Timber Giants host Kumasi Asante Kotoko in Samreboi tomorrow, while leaders Hearts of Oak chase a third straight victory and champions Medeama SC finally enter the league campaign after their CAF Champions League exit.
FC Samartex and Hearts are the only sides to have won their opening two matches, giving this weekend’s programme an early-season edge as the first meaningful patterns begin to emerge.
At the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, the spotlight falls on FC Samartex, who aim to extend a formidable home reputation against a Kotoko side still settling under South African coach Eric Tinkler.
The 2023/24 champions arrive with confidence after grinding out a 1-0 victory over Aduana FC in Dormaa-Ahenkro last Sunday. Under Coach Nana Kweku Agyemang, FC Samartex have looked more assertive and attack-minded, pressing with greater intent and playing with the conviction of a side prepared to impose itself rather than simply manage matches.
Kotoko’s opening weeks have been less convincing, but there are signs of improvement. The Porcupine Warriors began with a frustrating 2-2 draw away to debutants Debibi United before responding with a 2-1 victory over Heart of Lions last Sunday — their first win against the Kpando club in several years.
That result eased some early pressure and gave Tinkler a platform to build on ahead of a far more demanding assignment. Emmanuel Mamah, scorer against Lions, will again be central to Tinkler’s plans in tomorrow’s encounter, with goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, Koffi Marius Ange Bini, Joseph Amoah, Lord Hilary Adabo, Eric Gbetta and Morifing Donzo expected to carry significant responsibility.
History offers encouragement to both sides. Last season’s corresponding fixture in Samreboi ended goalless before FC Samartex won 2-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi.
Kotoko have nevertheless won four of their last eight meetings with Samartex. The Timber Giants have won twice, with two draws, but their Nsenkyire Arena base has developed into one of the league’s more difficult grounds since their title-winning campaign.
In Accra, table-topping Hearts of Oak face another test of their resurgence as the home side seek to extend their flawless opening when Bechem United visit the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The Phobians finished third last season but repeatedly surrendered points at home. Bosnian coach Nebojsa Kapor appears to be changing that trajectory, and Hearts now have the chance to secure a second home victory against opponents who have often proved awkward in previous meetings.
Champions Medeama, meanwhile, begin their domestic title defence later today against Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema after their continental commitments delayed their league start.
The Tarkwa side have dominated the fixture historically, winning three previous meetings and losing only once to Vision.
Elsewhere today, Swedru All Blacks travel to Kpando to face Heart of Lions, who remain in search of their first victory.
Tomorrow, debutants Port City FC host Berekum Chelsea at the Nana Boamah Darko II Park in Kukurantumi; Aduana FC welcome Karela United to Nana Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa-Ahenkro; and Debibi United face Young Apostles at Debibi Presby Park.
Dreams FC host Bibiani Gold Stars at the Tuba Astro Turf Park, while FC AshantiGold travel to the AAK II Sports Arena to face Basake Holy Stars.
