UPAC basketball tourney produces no winner

The Zone A qualifiers of the 2016 Rexona Universities Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship failed to produce a winner as rains disrupted the final two games at the University of Ghana Basketball court.

The contest started at noon on Saturday with late entrants, Pentecost University College (PUC), dominating the ties and looking on course to book their place in the quarter-finals of the flagship tertiary event on a sunny afternoon.

However, with clouds gathering, a series of entertainment displays such as the Basketball Dance Chairs delayed the start of the final two fixtures which were called off due to the downpour.

Pentecost University was the only team to win their opening two matches after defeating Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) 22-20 and Ho Polytechnic 36-30.

Pre-tournament favourites GIMPA recovered from an early setback after losing against Ho Polytechnic 15-19 to beat GTUC 30-26 to set up a decider against PUC.

GIMPA, after losing their opener against Ho Polytechnic, were given a boost by a student of the school, Samuel Anim Addo, who made a presentation of Rexona products as well as a winning bonus of GHC 300 to the team.

The decider, as well as the other tie between Ho Poly and GTUC, could not take place after two hours of rains and gusts of win forced organisers, Rite Sports, to postpone the match between GIMPA and PUC.

The next round of qualifiers involving Zone B teams; Tamale Polytechnic, Wa Polytechnic, NJA College of Education and University of Development Studies will be held in Tamale on Wednesday at the Ghana Secondary School campus.
