He said aside from promoting unity, sports also held the key to job creation as had been exemplified by the vibrant economic activities that usually take place during sports events; hence, the theme for the ongoing sports festival, “Unity and Job creation.”

He said regular sports competition organised for the citizens across the country, presented an opportunity for athletes and officials to develop friendships both on and off the fields and expose the participants to other perspective.

Dr Bawumia said government would continue to support sports in the country and ensure that the national sports festival, which had been stalled for about six years now, become a regular feature on the annual programmes of the National Sports Authority.

The sector minister, Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, also assured the public of the government’s resolve to continue with the festival to unearth talents from the regions to feed all the national teams.

He said the inability of the country to organise this annual festival in the past six years has resulted in the abysmal performance of the country at international games.

He said the ministry was in a discussion with the security agencies to revive the SESSA Games.

He encouraged all the participants to take active part in the games as “sports is about participation and you are all winners.”

In the opening game of the women’s football competition, Ashanti Region earned a lone goal victory over Upper East Region.
