WAFCON 2022: Cameroun edge Tunisia to book quarter-finals spot

Former Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions, Cameroun left it late to book a place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing competition in Morocco.

A goal in each half, the first as early as in the third minute, and the second as late as the 90th minute, helped the Indomitable Lionesses beat Tunisia 2-0 in their final Group B game to ease into the next round ahead of the North Africans.

Having drawn their two previous games against Togo and Zambia, the Indomitable Lionesses, hosts and runners-up of the 2016 competition, had their campaign under threat as they went into the final Group B game.

However, they turned things around, getting the results they so required to claim all three points to jump to second place in the group standings ahead of Tunisia.

Eager to make amends from their disappointing start, evergreen Ajara Nchout who currently plays for Italian female Serie A side, Inter Milan, put her side ahead in the third minute.

The Tunisians fought hard the entire time trying to equalise but were unable to break the resolute Cameroun defence.

Just when they were hoping to deal with that slim loss, the Indomitable Lionesses struck again, this time, a brilliant strike from US Houston Dash forward, Michaela Abam on the 90th minute, leaving no chance for the Carthage Eagles to recover.

The result pushed Cameroun to second place on five points behind Zambia who beat Togo 4-1 to top Group B on seven points.

Despite losing, Tunisia still made it to the quarter-finals as one of the best third placed teams, courtesy the 4-1 result they recorded against Togo in their opening group game.

Having qualified, Zambia will face Senegal in the quarter-finals.
