World Cup volunteers stranded

A group of accredited Ghanaian volunteers have been left stranded in Accra almost a week into the FIFA World Cup, unable to raise the necessary funds to enable them place their services at the disposal of participating teams, media and fans during the tournament.

Initially, 17 volunteers who were accredited by FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and assigned to different cities for various duties  such as ticketing, accreditation, airport protocol, media, logistics and transportation.However,  many of them have been forced to withdraw their application after making fruitless efforts to secure sponsorship from corporate bodies and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Volunteers are required to fund their trip to Brazil and would cater for their accommodation and feeding during the period of the tournament.

A spokesperson for the group, Abigail Evelyn Akaba, told the Daily Graphic that all the companied contacted, including official sponsors of the FIFA
