The investment, which is part of its five-year strategy that will end next year, has led to the increase of its cell sites to over 5,000 across the country, up from the region of 2,500 sites.

This came up during an MTN Media stakeholder forum held at its head office in Accra last Tuesday.

The forum saw managers of MTN Ghana interact with the media and give an update on its five-year digital plan (2021 - 2025) and corporate strategy dubbed Agenda 25.

The MTN team was led by the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe; MTN Mobile Money Limited (MML), Papa Osei; Senior Manager of Corporate Communications Georgina Asare Fiagbenu; the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Andrea Delphine; Head of Network Operations, Mr Magnus Kofi, Head of Legal and Reputation Management, Mobile Money Limited, Karl Paulsen; and others.

It was held on the theme: “Delivering digital solutions for Ghana’s Progress”, which also provided the media partners of the company with the company’s performance for the past year and plans for the future.

The forum also allowed the media to ask questions, make suggestions and provide feedback on MTN’s goal of leading digital solutions by 2025.

The media groups represented included the Network of Communications Reporters (NCR), Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA), the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG).

Ms Afriyie Wiafe, who led the MTN team, said the telecom giant was investing in network upgrades to boost connectivity and improve the quality of service across Africa.

"We are expanding our network and ensuring that we remain at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge technologies, including driving smartphone penetration across the continent," she said.

As part of its ongoing efforts to make digital services accessible to all, she added that they were piloting features for its mobile app platform, specifically for visually impaired users.

Commitment

Ms Wiafe said MTN was committed to leading Africa’s digital revolution through its strategic mission of offering innovative solutions.

“This goal aligns with MTN’s Agenda 2025 initiative to develop the most valuable digital platforms on the continent while also maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability through environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts,” the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer said.

Ms Wiafe said MTN was working to enhance its customer experience through cutting-edge technologies, such as AI-driven self-service tools, to streamline interactions, minimise in-person visits and empower customers to access services seamlessly across various platforms.

Agenda 2025

MTN’s strategic Agenda 2025 is aimed at building the largest and most valuable platforms across the continent.

As part of this mission, Ms Wiafe said the company was committed to driving industry connectivity and creating shared value, with a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.

The various media groupings made presentations on their expectations of the company in five years.

The Executive Secretary of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Jeorge Wilson Kingson, lauded MTN’s contributions to connectivity, financial inclusion and societal impact.

The President of JBA, Suleman Mustapha, said the association expected MTN to champion the development of smart cities, improve public services and support rural development with real-time data management and digital literacy programmes.

Leverage

The Vice Dean of NCA, Samuel Dowuona, urged MTN Ghana to continue to leverage its position in the telecommunications sector to boost financial inclusion and digital finance in the country.

He stressed the need for MTN Ghana to connect with the national GH QR Code platform, saying, “It is one of the tools we are using to bring financial inclusion and drive digitalisation in the country. If MTN connects, it will become much bigger because MTN is a major player.”
