Ghana launches 24-hour economy plan to boost self-reliance and exports

The government of Ghana has unveiled its comprehensive 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+), a bold initiative aimed at transforming the nation into a self-reliant, industrial, and export-driven economy.

The programme, described as Ghana’s flagship economic transformation agenda, seeks to integrate value chains, enhance market efficiency, and build a competitive workforce to drive inclusive growth and reduce import dependency.

In a public statement issued by the 24H+ Office, the programme was framed as both a vision and a practical framework. "As outlined by President John Dramani Mahama, the 24H+ is both a destination and a programme," the statement read.

"As a destination, it envisions a Ghana where productivity is so robust that economic activity runs around the clock. As a programme, it offers a clear and actionable framework to restructure our economy from the ground up through agro-processing, digital innovation, infrastructure, logistics, skills development, and export competitiveness."

The initiative emphasises national mobilisation, calling on citizens, investors, and development partners to actively participate in its implementation. "The 24H+ programme is fundamentally a citizens' and partners’ mobilisation programme built on the conviction that the transformation we seek is best achieved through the full national mobilisation of our People, with clear roles for both the public and private sectors," the statement noted.

Key components of the plan include the establishment of agroecological parks (Agbleduwo) to boost agricultural productivity, the development of industrial parks (Wumbei) to enhance manufacturing, and the creation of efficient supply chains to reduce post-harvest losses and logistics costs. The programme also prioritises skills development, access to affordable financing, and the revitalisation of Ghana’s cultural and creative industries to foster economic diversification.

President Mahama has directed the widespread dissemination of the 24H+ document to encourage public engagement. "We invite you to read the document, reflect on the vision, and share your thoughts with us," the statement urged. "The 24H+ Initiative belongs to all of us, and your voice matters."

Stakeholders are encouraged to submit feedback via the programme’s official social media platforms on Instagram, X (Twitter), and TikTok under the handle @24hourplus. The government has positioned the initiative as a collective effort, with the statement concluding: "Let’s build together!"
