Let’s work together to ensure stability, security in turbulent world - Speaker to Commonwealth nations

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on Commonwealth member states to work together to ensure stability and security in the world.

He said the world was in an era where uncertainties required members to keep “bonding and moving” together in finding solutions to the worldwide turbulence.

The Speaker said it was only when people enjoyed security and stability that development would become more meaningful to them.

“It is, therefore, good for people of like minds to come together to intervene and bring stability and security before we can talk about development,” he added.

The Speaker said these when a delegation from the Royal College of Defence Studies in London called on him at his office in Accra yesterday.

Delegation

The delegation, which included top security experts from nine countries, was led by the Commandant of the RCDs, Lt General Sir George Norton.

The RCD is an institute of higher education that instructs most promising senior officers of the British Armed Forces, His Majesty's Diplomatic Service and Civil Service in national defence and international security matters at the highest level to prepare them for the top posts in their respective services.

They are in Ghana to learn about security challenges and opportunities in the country, and also share experiences with the UK Parliament and other Commonwealth nations.

Working together

The Speaker further stressed the need for member countries to stay united, adding “there is no need to split because we still need to work together. I am also happy that Europe seems to be getting closer to Africa than before.

“We do not need to learn the bitter lesson of the UK exiting EU before we work together because we are one and the same people, and that is what creation is about,” he said.

Mr Bagbin explained that bonding together would help members state to be each other’s keeper.

The Speaker described the British Royal Navy College as a very strategic institution which had trained many leaders in Commonwealth countries since the colonial days.

Focus

Lt Gen. Norton said the Royal Navy College's purpose was to prepare senior security personnel for the strategic level of decision-making.

“Our focus is at the grand strategic level and it is really about understanding the challenges and the opportunities facing the world and how we might best go about addressing them, and how the world is going about addressing these challenges,” he said.
