A dispute over Malawi's representation at Miss World 2026 drew scrutiny after reigning queen Thandi Chisi was dropped in favour of the first runner-up, Ireen Navicha, the daughter of Malawi's Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha.
Chisi won the Miss Malawi contest and was crowned on 13 December in Lilongwe, positioning her to represent Malawi at Miss World, according to Citizen Digital.
Miss Malawi organisers instead selected Navicha to compete at the pageant, held in Vietnam from 9 August to 5 September 2026, a decision that sparked backlash and raised questions about transparency and fairness. The switch came as Malawi returned to the pageant after a 14-year absence.
A report by Saharareporters.com mentioned organisers initially cited Chisi's age, claiming she exceeded the Miss World age limit. That explanation quickly drew scrutiny, since official guidelines generally cover contestants aged 17 to 27 and Chisi would still be 27 at the time of the pageant.
The Miss Malawi Organisation later apologised, with local media quoting its chief executive, Benedette Mweso, as saying it took "full responsibility for causing the age eligibility confusion.
Prophet Shepherd Bushiri's Goshen City, the pageant's principal sponsor, offered a different explanation, attributing the decision to its board's "new approach to creating opportunities for all finalists" and to the selected finalist's "international experience."
Local media quoted the Miss Malawi board chairperson, Prophetess Mary Bushiri, as saying international opportunities "would not be limited to the winner alone, but would also be made available to the first and second runners-up, as well as other finalists."
Organisers didn't say whether they would reverse the decision. Miss World later confirmed on its website that Navicha represented Malawi, effectively closing the window for Chisi.
Responding to the snub, Chisi struck an upbeat tone, saying a "crown does not make a Queen; character does. And no circumstance can take that away."
In a statement on July 27, she said she was confident that "in due course, the relevant facts will emerge," and promised to address the matter "openly and responsibly at the appropriate time."
Navicha went on to compete in Vietnam and bowed out of the contest on 5 September after failing to progress from the Top 40 to the Top 20.
She nonetheless became the first Malawian representative to reach the Top 40 stage of the pageant, marking the country's best-ever performance at the contest.
Miss World, first held in London in 1951, is one of the longest-running and most prestigious international beauty pageants. Alongside its traditional beauty and evening wear segments, the competition places heavy emphasis on humanitarian work through its Beauty With a Purpose initiative, which recognises contestants for charitable projects in their communities. The pageant draws representatives from well over 100 countries each year, with the Top 40 stage regarded as a significant milestone for smaller pageant nations.
