Residents living downstream of the Weija Dam have been urged to evacuate their homes ahead of the resumption of spillage of excess water from the dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
In a press statement issued Monday morning (Sept 7, 2026), the Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) indicated that the precautionary measure has become necessary following a rise in the water level of the dam to 45.2 feet, close to the 46-foot threshold.
It explained that the rise in the water level was due to heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall in the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
The GWL therefore urged residents to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
It said communities likely to be affected included but not limited to Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
Prepare for evacuation
The GWL had also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
It gave assurances that it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates to the public.
It stressed that the safety of residents remained its priority and urged the public to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation.
“GWL is closely watching the situation and will continue to provide updates. The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” it said.
