He’s a comedian — Nana Akua reacts to Dr Likee TGMA outfit backlash
Popular Ghanaian comedian and actor Dr Likee has found support from actress/fashion personality Nana Akua Addo following criticisms over his outfit at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
Speaking about conversations surrounding fashion on local Red Carpets in a recent chat with Graphic Showbiz, Nana Akua Addo defended Dr Likee, insisting that fashion should not be viewed from a narrow perspective, especially when it comes to entertainers whose personalities influence their style choices.
“I personally don’t have any issue with what Dr Likee wore because he is a comedian. People will see his outfit and burst into laughter. That is what I believe he did so people should relax on the backlash. Besides, fashion is diverse and there's no rule for it," she stated.
Known for her bold and theatrical fashion statements at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Nana Akua Addo said Red Carpet fashion has evolved beyond simply dressing up and has become a major publicity tool for celebrities.
Over the years, her appearances at the AMVCA have sparked conversations across Africa, making her one of the continent’s most talked-about fashion figures.
Touching on criticisms of celebrity fashion at the TGMA, she argued that attention is often disproportionately given to controversial looks while stylish appearances are ignored.
“I don’t think those who appeared on TGMA Red Carpet were worst dressed compared to AMVCA because I saw some very good dresses on the night. So why didn’t we highlight that but allowed the shabby looks to be interviewed?” she quizzed.
According to her, organisers of award events also have a role to play in shaping the quality and direction of Red Carpet conversations by properly curating the platform.
