Temporary Eid livestock markets must secure permits or face closure, MOFA warns

Operators of temporary livestock markets set up ahead of this year’s Eid celebrations have been warned to obtain approval from the appropriate authorities or risk closure and sanctions.

The Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) said many temporary livestock markets springing up in open spaces across major towns and cities are operating without veterinary inspection, approved sanitation arrangements and proper authorisation.

A directive issued on Friday, May 22, 2026, and signed by the Acting Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Emmanuel Allegye Cudjoe, on behalf of the Minister of Food and Agriculture, said the situation poses risks to public health, animal health and public safety.

According to the department, some of the markets lack biosecurity measures and animal disease surveillance systems, raising fears over the possible spread of zoonotic and transboundary animal diseases.

The department also cited concerns about environmental pollution, traffic congestion and security challenges linked to the uncontrolled operation of such markets.

It therefore directed all livestock traders and market operators to comply with veterinary, public health, environmental sanitation and local government regulations before operating.

MOFA further instructed that all temporary livestock markets established for the Eid festivities must be dismantled immediately after the celebrations.

It warned that operators who fail to comply could face closure of their markets, confiscation and other sanctions by the relevant authorities.

The ministry said the directive was issued under the Diseases of Animals Act, 1961 (Act 83), which mandates the Veterinary Services Department to regulate activities that may threaten animal and public health.

The department appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, Regional Coordinating Councils, security agencies, traditional authorities, religious leaders and the public to support efforts to maintain public safety and sanitation during the festive period.
