Parents must be responsible - Methodist Minister
The Superintendent Minister of the New Aplaku Circuit of the Methodist Church Ghana, Very Rev. Emmanuel Evans Essien, has reminded parents of their responsibility to take care of their children.
As such, he charged them to be responsible in providing their children with the best of care, saying, “when you give birth and you make an effort to raise the child, then somebody can support, but you don’t expect society to take that full responsibility of caring for your children,” he pointed out.
Very Rev. Essien said this when the Bethel Methodist Church, a Methodist society under the New Aplaku Circuit, presented various food items including detergents and learning materials to the Methodist Rehabilitation Project and Hope for Teens Skills Training Centre in Accra.
The two centres are both institutions of the Methodist Church Ghana that offer skills training and education to needy teenagers and street children.
The donation formed part of the Bethel Month celebration of the church.

Very Rev. Essien said things that were currently going on in society were not good for children to live their lives without the supervision of their parents or guardians.
Caring for children
“So we are begging parents and anyone who has given birth to a child to try to take care of them. If you are not ready to cater for your children, you should as well not go into childbirth,” he advised.
To the street children who had been rescued and placed at the institution, he urged them to be obedient and adhere to rules.
The Society Steward of the Bethel Methodist Church, Derick Agyei Gyamfi, said the church had set aside September of every year as an occasion to socialise and show love to the needy, the poor and vulnerable in society, hence the donations.
Gratitude
Receiving the items, both the Director of the Methodist Rehabilitation Centre and the Accra Diocesan Coordinator on Gender and Family Life Issues, Christiana Odoi and Rebecca Nettey, respectively, thanked the church for the donation and appealed for more support for the children there.
The centres
The Methodist Rehabilitation Centre is a social intervention project of the Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana.
The church embarked on an evangelism programme at various markets in Accra and the children they picked up on the streets during that programme subsequently led to the establishment of the centre in 2010.
